Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion measurement through inclusive research practices

The Kaleidoscope Group is a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultancy trusted by 1,000+ clients over the past 30 years. Each year, Kaleidoscope surveys thousands of employees about DEI using their proprietary measurement framework. Due to the significant changes to the workforce over the past few years, the company decided to update its framework.

They retained Mary Hunter of DataLarks to partner with industrial-organizational psychologist Rachel Baghelai, Ph.D., PMP on this critical initiative.

Mary and Rachel collaborated on critical points in design, execution, validation, and communication. This included selecting research practices and applied inclusion to ensure all voices were heard and divergent perspectives considered in the analysis and framework development.

The collaboration also empowered each person to lean into their unique strengths, skills, and experience. Rachel led the analysis and validation, while Mary applied her data interpretation, communication, and storytelling expertise.

It is essential to acknowledge that not all employees have the same experience at work. Therefore, representation matters when developing tools and solutions intended to impact your entire workforce to ensure different needs and perspectives are considered in decision-making.

The research uncovered seven core elements of DEI in the workplace. Applied inclusion in the process made a tangible difference in research outcomes. Because of the inclusive research practices applied, Knowing their updated framework addresses what truly matters to employees of all backgrounds and perspectives, Kaleidscope proudly uses it to help clients make data-driven decisions for positive DEI outcomes.

The research's success resulted from a healthy collaboration and applied inclusion. Rachel and Mary approached their partnership with mutual respect for each other's unique skills and experiences. A shared vision and goal strengthened their collaboration--make the workplace better for everyone by developing an outstanding DEI measurement framework that considers divergent perspectives.
